A Response to “Letter to the editor”

Dear Regina,

Thank you for your letter, at the banner we value our readers and their insights regarding the integrity of all our banner sanctioned content.

In an effort to work more collaboratively and communicate more effectively with the CSI students and our publication, let’s discuss some of these concerns…

  1. You’re not the only one worried about all our typos, grammar, and inaccurate information. This issue has been the subject of numerous similar remarks and concerns, and I agree that it does come across as pretty unprofessional. Rest assured that we are working to enhance our line editing skills, and we anticipate that this problem will be fixed as soon as possible. Being a publication run and governed by CSI students, our student body has consistently done a commendable job of informing our staff about ways to enhance our publication, particularly when it comes to problems like these.
  1. About your second concern, we have taken down our most recently released episode of our podcast, “Breaking the Banner“, which was broadcast on October 20th, 2024. This project was created to make it easier for students who might not be able to read the Banner as frequently as they would like via our website. This show was established to create yet another forum where our students (and professors) can express their personal interests, viewpoints, remarks, and concerns regarding their college experience at CSI and as citizens of Staten Island. To encourage discussions on our experiences and observations as students attending the college and to make sure we are heard. This podcast has always had that as its main objective; it has never been intended to advertise or disparage any company, person, or demographic of people above others. This project is still quite young, having only been started in the spring semester of 2024. Even so, we are constantly trying to improve the way we present our fellow students and present our discussion points in a way that is appropriate, courteous, and encouraging when discussing any discourse on campus and with any local issues.
  1. Concerning your third point, the absence of your byline was a mistake and further demonstrates our very apparent line editing problem. That mistake has now been fixed. Our staff is attempting to create a more accurate portrayal of student concerns and campus issues, which includes verifying the information we post and asking those who don’t embrace Banner beliefs, to be placed under heavy review and critique when revising their articles.

Sincerely,

Elina N. Milimoh
