A passionate sci-fi enthusiast takes on a journey of movie critique

Since watching the movie Interstellar in 2016, Franceso Defiore had an instant connection to science fiction. This was the start of a long-sophisticated journey that will be the determination of what he would like to do in the future, which is a movie critique.
“I love everything that has to do with space and the scientific aspect of what is being watched,” said Defiore. “Every film is different in its own way, they each have their own story to tell”.
Defiore takes on a Communications major to get closer to his goal of becoming a movie critic. He believes that other genres such as horror do not bring the same critical thinking and philosophical mental aspect to the table.
According to Loud and Clear Reviews, critics have enjoyed sci-fi for their imaginative purposes as it blends the real and unreal. It is also mentioned that sci-fi has shown itself to be one of the best genres in film with its countless exciting and impactful ways. It is known to help you get the best of both worlds of science and fiction.
“There is such a vast majority of films,” said Defiore. “This was when I realized I can watch any sci-fi movie and find joy in it.”
Sci-fi is one of the top performing genres in terms of sales in movie tickets. The Numbers say that between 1995 and 2025, this genre leads with a 25.47% market share along with one of the top movies, Star Wars:The Force Awakens earning $2.05 billion globally.
According to Defiore, the whole Star Wars movie series is one he can watch over and over again and never get bored. He believes that movies of sci-fi being partaken in places such as space is what really makes the most of the genre and how it is viewed, especially for movies such as Star Wars.
Being a movie critic is something that Defiore views himself doing for a very long time in the near future. As he is not a biased movie reviewer, he does believe that even his own favorite genre has its own flaws. Some of the flaws being that some of the movies may be exaggerated to a certain extent and for some movies it either may be too long or too short, which can make it hard to watch at times.
The movie critic business may seem fun but Defiore knows that it can be a hard business. You have to get used to not only watching movies for fun, but being able to analyze them deeply and not only look at the good of them. At times they may also face backlash themselves as if the viewers love the movie, but if the critic made a negative review, it may stir up the pot.
“I know it’s not going to be an easy journey, but I am ready for it,” said Defiore. “Realizing I wanted this to be my future has probably been one of the best things of my life.”
