CSI’s Aspiring Sports Writer
By Francesco DeFiore
It was a cold and rainy Sunday afternoon on the campus of CSI when Justin Williams and I sat for an interview. Although the day was cloudy and dark, it was evident when this aspiring sports writer began speaking about his passions; his smile lit up the room. When asked about why he wants to be a sports writer he replied:
“I love writing and I love writing about something I love,” he said. “And that’s sports.”

The love of sports, for Justin, started at a young age. His love for basketball continued into his high school career. At LaSalle Academy on the lower east side of Manhattan, Justin became a member of the basketball team. As a team member, Justin bonded with his teammates which led to a positive distraction.

“ Basketball is peace. It makes me feel happy and like myself. Everything else gets distracted,” he said. “If I am sad or upset, basketball is my scapegoat.”
Family Life is very important to Justin. Justin’s parents and brother have always been supportive of him. His older brother has had a big influence over his life and his career choice. Justin looks up to his older brother and can speak to him about anything. His brother has always been the person he goes to with his problems and for advice,
“I cannot remember a time when we didn’t get along,” he said. “Even though my brother is eight years older than I am, he has always been a big part of my life. He is my safe place.”
Justin’s passion for basketball extends beyond the game. One of his hobbies is also collecting sneakers. Justin’s love for collecting sneakers began after high school. Justin explained that in high school he wore a uniform with dress shoes every day. It was not until after graduation that he began buying more sneakers and that is when his passion grew. Sneakers are a big part of the basketball culture and go hand in hand with his love of sports.

Even though Justin did not continue his basketball career in college, he still enjoys playing the game with friends in his spare time. When asked what he likes to do when he is not in school or at work, Justin said:
“ I like to go to the gym,” he said “I go to the gym six times a week.” Exercise keeps him focused and helps him to stay physically fit.
Justin Williams is really focused on his academics. After graduation from CSI, he plans on continuing his education and obtaining a degree in Sports Journalism.

“I’m really looking forward to the future,” he said. “Becoming a sports journalist, growing everyday and having a family of my own.”
