This film is an adaptation of the 2022 science fiction novel Mickey7 written by Edward Ashton.
I’ve never seen a Bong Joon Ho film but after hearing how good his previous and best picture winning film Parasite was, I was very intrigued to check out his newest film Mickey17 in theaters. Now that I’ve finally watched the film, here are my thoughts.
Mickey 17 is hands down the wackiest film of 2025 so far. The Batman himself, Robert Pattinson who plays the titular character, is amazing as the lead in this film. He plays two different versions of his character, both total opposites, and does it to utter perfection. He can be silly and goofy at times while also being deranged and unhinged.
He is also hilarious in this film. In my humble opinion his performance in this film really cements him as one of the greatest actors of our generation.
I am not the biggest fan of Mark Ruffalo, I only really know him from playing the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but surprisingly Ruffalo is also a massive standout in this film as the main villain. Just like Pattinson, he is hilarious, zany, and ridiculous in a funny way. I would even go as far as to say this is a career best performance for Mark Ruffalo. The rest of the cast members were also really good.
This movie is a great blend of many genres. It is a good Sci-fi flick, has some great romance, an amazing comedy and even a good drama; all the performances elevate these aspects of the film.
The story was very interesting, especially when it focused on Robert Pattinson’s character. We see things he goes through in the movie, and a lot of the emotion in this movie comes from his character. All of this is portrayed perfectly and is easily one of the best parts of the film.
The cinematography in this movie was amazing, I really loved how this movie looked and felt. Like I said before, the comedy in this movie is hilarious and I would even say that it’s the film’s greatest attribute. It is easily one of the funniest movies I have seen this year so far. This movie also feels like there was a lot of heart put into it, and you can tell the actors had a blast making this film. Now those were my positives.
The only real negative that I had with this film was the first act. The first 45 minutes of this film is spent explaining everything that’s happening in the movie, and while I appreciate that it helped the audience understand what was happening it felt like it dragged on for a bit too long.
The movie didn’t really get interesting until the second act of the film, so the first act felt like a slog to get through. It affected my experience watching the film a bit but not too much.
I rated this movie 4.5/ 5 stars on letterboxd. If you’re just looking for a great story, good laugh and a fun time, I really recommend this movie.
Overall, Mickey 17 is just such a fun and wacky ride, I really enjoyed my time watching the film.
