A Minecraft Movie- A Blocky yet Entertaining Mess

By: Francesco DeFiore

A Minecraft Movie is a film directed by Jared Hess and is based on the best selling game of all time Minecraft by Mojang Studios.

I have played Minecraft my entire life, since it first launched. In my opinion, it is easily one of the greatest games ever made. It has been a large and important part of my life, so when I heard that a live action Minecraft movie would be made I was instantly on board with it. Now that it has finally been released here are my thoughts

A Minecraft Movie was a wild experience that I haven’t had in a long time. I easily had one of the craziest theater experiences watching this film. If I am looking at this movie critically it is not a well made film for a variety of reasons, but if I’m being honest I can’t deny that I had so much fun when I watched this movie and was very entertained.

Jack Black’s character Steve was easily the best part of the film. This is hands down one of the most insane performances I have ever seen put to film. You can really tell that Jack Black had the time of his life playing this role. His character is basically just announcing things the entire film. Usually that would be a bad thing but I think it really worked in the movie’s favor. Literally every time Jack Black’s character spoke or explained something the theater erupted in laughter and screams. Everyone went insane, it was just so silly and ridiculous. This most likely was all due to the memes on the internet. He is easily the standout of this entire film.

Another standout was Jason Momoa, his character was funny, had a compelling backstory, and had great chemistry with Jack Black’s Character.

Surprisingly, for a not so great film, it looked beautiful. The film captured the world of Minecraft to a t. The set designs were amazing, it was visually appealing and the CGI was for the most part flawless. The mobs in the Minecraft world also looked really nice, both design wise and vfx wise.

If you’re a Minecraft fan like myself, you will like this film because of the  cool easter eggs and surprises that leave you on the edge of your seat. I do believe that the people who made this film truly respected the source material and put their heart into the film which captured the Minecraft magic. Unfortunately that’s where my positives end.

One of the major reasons why I didn’t really enjoy this movie was because it lacked a compelling story. The first act of this film, before the characters entered the Minecraft world, was so bad and dragged on for too long. Even once the charactersentered the Minecraft world the story is still very boring, bland and generic. It was also very predictable. It was easy to figure out where the movie would go and how it would end.

Another reason I didn’t like this movie was due to some of the characters. Besides Jack Black and Jason Momoa the rest of the cast were not great. Some of the actors such as Danielle Brook and Jennifer Coolidge served no purpose in the film and had nothing to do while actors such as Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Emma Myers had something to do in this movie but just weren’t interesting enough for me to care about them. Most of these characters are a waste of space and the movie would have been much better without them.

Lastly, while the dialogue in this film had a stupid, yet funny aspect, I can’t deny that the  majority of it is just atrocious. It was  just too cheesy and made me not take this film seriously. I understood that this is a movie targeted towards children but the people who made this film could have at least tried to make the dialogue great and not so ridiculous

Overall A Minecraft Movie is just a stupid, fun and entertaining mess. Other than the moment popcorn was thrown on me, I had a very enjoyable experience. If your kid is a Minecraft fan I would really recommend this movie cause they will have a blast.
