Letter to the Editor

To the Editor:

I am writing in strong support of the New York Health Act, a crucial piece of legislation that would guarantee comprehensive, universal healthcare for all New Yorkers. By eliminating financial barriers, this bill ensures that healthcare is a right, not a privilege. The New York Health Act will lower overall costs, improve health outcomes, and provide much-needed relief to families and businesses burdened by high insurance premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

Getting the New York Health Act is so crucial, due to how widespread the effects of unaffordable healthcare are. According to the 2018 Healthy CUNY survey, “nearly 33,000 undergraduates, or 13.5%, reported that some health problem had interfered with their school work”. Those who receive reliable and affordable healthcare are able to spend less on healthcare and manage their wellness, while still maintaining their grades without the danger of failing. Growing up, my family struggled to make ends meet whenever an injury would occur and a hospital bill would come back. Many times when one of us did not feel well, we would do every home remedy possible to avoid receiving medical assistance and then getting that bill that would impact our lives and where to find funds for other essentials afterward. The feeling of having to choose between your health and your next meal or your utility bills is something nobody should have to experience.

Now more than ever, we need to urge our elected officials to pass The New York Health Act (S7590/A07897) to receive universal free healthcare. I urge readers to contact the elected officials in your area via phone, email, and campaigns. Your voice and support can make a great difference in a topic that affects us all.

Sincerely,
