The Ins and Outs of CSI
By: Keanu Agard
For students like myself, commuting to and from CSI can be a hassle. Public transportation to Staten Island, sucks. The MTA buses are often crowded as a result of them running behind schedule, causing students to be late for class.
As of Fall 2024, CSI discontinued the ferry shuttle service from the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in St. George to the CSI campus, which was of great importance to many of its student and faculty riders. Due to the suspension of this service, rather than the various other bus routes available, the S93 bus located in front of 1A has been the main and preferred form of transportation connecting CSI to Brooklyn and the other three boroughs, via a transfer to the R train at 86th Street in Bay Ridge.
Due to the added influx of CSI students, faculty, and members of the general public, the wait times and lines for the bus are unbearable. It’s always a race against the clock to make it to the bus stop, whether on or off campus, hoping that the bus doesn’t leave before or after its next scheduled departure.
So, how do we fix this ongoing issue?
I suggest simply bringing back the ferry shuttle and/or collaborating with the MTA to increase the number of departures on the S93 bus route. Realistically speaking, the ferry shuttle brought great comfort and reliability to its riders’ commute on a daily basis, elevating the heavy flow of traffic at the S93 bus stops.
With these implementations, CSI would be widely and easily accessible by public transportation to not only current but also future students and faculty. Furthermore, ensuring that we students arrive safely, on time, and ready to learn.
