Wicked For Good: A Satisfyingly Wicked Conclusion

Wicked For Good is the second part in the movie adaptation of the Wicked Broadway Play and is directed by Jon M. Chu. Here is what I thought about the movie.

I had an absolute blast with Wicked For Good and it is easily one of the best movies of the year. However, in my opinion, it isn’t better than the first. I’ve never seen the play but I know a lot of people say that Act 1 of the play is way better than Act 2. Unfortunately, that also stands for the movies.

Just like the previous movie both Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo killed it as the two main leads, Elphaba and Glinda. Their performances were just so electric and completely blew me away.

They have some of the best chemistry that I have ever seen in a movie and are perfectly casted for their respective roles. And of course I can not forget to mention how beautiful their voices are in this film, their singing is amazing. Their performances also were really emotional and powerful. Another standout is definitely Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero who was also amazing in this film. Other then those standouts, the entire cast was amazing and had their chance to shine.

Just like the first movie, this movie is visually stunning. It’s so colorful and vibrant and they did an amazing job of capturing the World Of Oz. Both the set and costume designs were amazing, and the CGI was really good. There was never a moment where this film looked terrible. Definitely one of the highlights of this film

The story in this film picks up right where the first movie left off, and I really enjoyed that. I do like how this movie is more story-driven and serious than the first movie, which was more lighthearted and fun. Also, I personally loved the ending of the film. The ending was so shocking, surprising and satisfying. It did a phenomenal job at concluding the story that was being told in these two films.

But those are were my positives end. Now I only have a few complaints. First off, I feel like the movie went by so fast and has no time to breathe. I believe that this is due to the shorter runtime. Yes, we get to spend time with the main leads but some of the other characters in this film don’t have that luxury. Also, when the movie attempts to connect the events of this film and “The Wizard of Oz” it just feels so rushed and not thought out very well. It’s not too much of a problem, but I feel like if this movie was a bit longer it would fix this minor issue.

Secondly, I feel like this movie really lacked the charm that the first movie had. Like I said before the first film was more lighthearted and fun and this was shown mostly through the musical sequences which were all really memorable and iconic. With the sequel, it really lacks that. Although I like and can appreciate that the movie took a way more darker and serious tone to focus on the story, I think that because of that we don’t have any of the charm from the first film. And this problem is very noticeable in the musical sequences in this film which to be honest weren’t that great. One or two songs were good, but the majority of them were very forgettable. And this movie just doesn’t feel as fun as the first, which is unfortunate. I still loved the film but it just lacks what made the first film so special and beloved.

Other than that, I really loved my time with Wicked For Good. It may not be as good as the first film, but I still think it’s a worthy successor and the perfect conclusion to the story they were telling. I was very satisfied walking out of the theater. I really recommend you see this movie before it leaves theaters.
