As summer arrives, we’re faced with the ultimate closet dilemma: Are last year’s jorts a seasonal staple, or a trend that needs to be put in the trash to never be seen again?

The latest summer craze of the season is back, and it’s jorts. As the trend resurfaces for the second year in a row, fashion observers remain divided: Are these so-called jorts ready for a comeback, or are they just glorified denim capris trying to be jean shorts?
Not only are guys rocking jorts, but girls are too, instead of regular jean shorts. People can’t wait for the weather to turn above 70 to wear them out and style them, with either a baggy hoodie or a baggy shirt, or even a tight-fitting tank. The options are limitless, unless you are a jorts hater.
“You can wear jorts in all different ways,” said Ava Bell. “ I even have dressed up in jorts and made them a staple in my outfits.”
Jorts are anything people can create from them. You can either dress it up or dress it down. It’s one of those pieces that can be worn either way.
Jorts are not for everyone, and that’s okay, but why are they so popular today? Despite looking like simple DIY jean shorts cut with scissors, people are selling out stores and spending $50 or more on pairs they could easily make themselves. The question is, what drives this enduring enthusiasm for jorts?
“I picked up a pair of jorts and thought to myself,” said Julia. “These look homemade and need to be in a pit of fire.”
It all started in the 60’s, when people would cut off the legs of their most-worn jeans and make them jorts to save money. Then, in the 90s, baggy jorts came around, popularized by hip-hop culture. Then, it crept back in 2024, with famous people like Kendall Jenner and the Hadid sisters wearing them. They went into a craze last year and now they’re due for a comeback this coming summer.
There are some people who are not jumping on the jorts wagon this year or last year or ever, with some people saying they would never be caught in them over their dead body. Harsh, but maybe true, given this fashion trend that everyone has under a spell.
“The style isn’t for me, “ said Rebecca Miller. “I just don’t see the appeal of those types of shorts; the length is too long, and the style is just not flattering on everyone.”
A lot of people think it just won’t fit their body shape. Many believe they need an hourglass body shape to be able to look good in jorts.
“I love jorts,” said Rebecca Miller. “I wish they looked good on me.”
But others say it doesn’t matter what your body type is; if you have the confidence, you can pull it of. Which, in my opinion sounds ridiculous. Jorts don’t have to be for everyone.
You even have people who love them and wish they could wear them in all four seasons and in all kinds of weather. Basically, saying jorts are their life and nothing else could outdo it. One person called it a staple in her summer outfit rotation, while another called it denim capris and said she would never buy them.
“I love jorts, it gives me that 90s look in 2026,” said Patricia. “ It knows how to fit me in all the right places.”
