The Dolphins’ concluded their regular season with a 3-1 victory over Medgar Evers College at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center on Tuesday.
Senior Justin Edwardsen, was honored by his coaches and teammates during a pregame ceremony. Edwardsen was pivotal in the creation of the men’s volleyball at CSI two years ago and helped his team reach a CUNYAC Postseason Tournament for the second year in a row.
With the victory the Dolphins finished the season with a 4-12 record against CUNYAC opponents and a 8-19 overall record.
While the Cougars fell to 0-17 in division games and 2-24 overall.
The Middle Blocker senior would start the match for the Dolphins and contribute 5.5 points for his team. Edwardsen finished the season with 222.5 which was 25 more points than any other player on the team.
The Dolphins jumped out to an impressive 4-13 advantage over the Cougars in the first set, but would ultimately unravel during the remainder of the first set.
Medgar Evers College was led by Jamal Chance and helped his team string together a 7-1 run forcing Head Coach Juan Lopez to call a timeout. The brief pause didn’t seem to have any effect on the Cougars, as they would win the set 27-25.
After blowing a huge lead in the opening set, the Dolphins would come out into the second set looking more focused and composed.
The Dolphins and Cougars would go back-and-forth as neither team was able to pull away from one another.
With a 19-19 tie, Khaleeq Baum would help his team score two points giving the Dolphins a 21-19 point advantage.
From that point on the Dolphins wouldn’t look back and would win the second set 25-21.
Heading into the third set the Dolphins would jump out to a big 17-9 lead after the Cougars committed several careless errors.
The Cougars would commit a total of nine errors during the third set which was the most the would commit during the remainder of the match.
CSI never gave the Cougars a chance to relate and would coast to an easy 25-19 victory of them in the third set of the night.
With the help of Edwardsen the Dolphins would again cruise to an easy victory in what would be the game’s final round.
The senior tacked on fours assists on seven attacks and didn’t commit a single error in the final set.
The Dolphins would go on to win the fourth set 25-16 and giving them a postseason appearance.
Other notable performances from the Dolphins included freshmen Kevin Rosero who led his team with 17 kills on 39 attacks, while Khaleeq Baum had 13 kills on 30 attacks.
Also, sophomore Brandon Lei contributed 46 assists in the victory.
With the win, the Dolphins secured the eighth seed in the CUNYAC Postseason Tournament and will go on to face the number one seed Baruch.
The 16-12 Bearcats won both regular season matchups against the Dolphins and did so in a dominant fashion.
Baruch College swept CSI in both games and was a matchup nightmare for the Dolphins.
Baruch’s leading point getter and Captain, Brady Ambro, has been the team’s rock all season long and will have to be contained if the Dolphins want to upset the number one overall seed.
The CSI and Baruch will meet in the CUNYAC Postseason Tournament quarterfinals on April 5 in New York.
If the Dolphins can make it to the Championship game, they will play at the Baruch College Sports & Recreation Center.
