Musicians Nominated for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards

On Tuesday, April 17, Billboard released its nominations for their 2018 music awards.

Some artists who were nominated include Drake, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift, Cardi B, Imagine Dragons, Panic! At The Disco, and BTS.

Billboard is a magazine emphasizing entertainment and music. They publish music charts ranking popular songs and albums.

The BBMA’s started in 1990 in December, and were held annually until 2006. They were then revived in 2011, where they were held annually in May.  

“Nominees for the BBMAs are selected through a number of factors, including key interactions with music fans, album and digital song sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social engagement, as tracked by Billboard and its data partners over a 12-month period” (Billboard).

Fans can vote for two categories of awards. These include the Billboard Chart Achievement Award and the Top Social Artist.

The categories for the 2018 Billboard Music Awards include Top Artist, Top Duo/Group, Top Social Artist, Top Selling Album, and Top Rock Album.

Drake is a rapper who is nominated for nine awards, including Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Album. He is known for songs such as “God’s Plan,” “Work,” and “One Dance”.

Drake’s album “More Life” is nominated for Top Rap Album and Top Billboard 200 Album. Last year, Drake was nominated for 22 awards at the BBMAs, and won 13 awards.

Ed Sheeran is nominated for 15 awards, along with Bruno Mars and Kendrick Lamar. He is nominated for Top Artist, Top Male Artist, and Top Billboard 200 Album.

Sheeran’s album “Divide” is nominated for Top Billboard 200 Album. His song “Perfect” is also nominated for Top Selling Song.

Bruno Mars is nominated 15 awards including Top R&B Artist, Top Song Sales Artist, and Top Artist. His album “24K Magic” is nominated for Top R&B Album. Mars is known for his songs “Finesse,” “24K Magic,” and “That’s What I Like.”

Kendrick Lamar is a rapper nominated for 15 awards. These awards include Top Rap Album, Top 100 Song, and Top Rap Song.

Lamar is known for his song “Humble,” which is nominated for Top Rap Song.

Taylor Swift is nominated for five awards this year, including Top Selling Album, Top Billboard 200 Album, and Top Female Artist.

Her album “Reputation” is nominated for Top Selling Album and Top Billboard 200 Album. She is known for her songs “Delicate” and “Look What You Made Me Do.”

Next is Cardi B, known for her song “Bodak Yellow.” She also collaborated on “Finesse” with Bruno Mars.

She has eight nominations, including Top Rap Female Artist, Top new Artist, and Top Rap Song. Her and Mars’ song “Finesse” is nominated for Top R&B Song.

Rock group Imagine Dragons is nominated for 11 awards. These nominations include Top Rock Album, Top Duo/Group, and Top Rock Song.

They are known for their song “Thunder” and “Believer.” Their album “Evolve” is nominated for Top Rock Album.

Panic! At The Disco is another rock group nominated for Top Rock Album, headlined by vocalist Brendon Urie. Their album up for an award is titledDeath of a Bachelor”.

“Death of a Bachelor” is Panic! At the Disco’s fifth album. It includes songs such as the title track “Death of a Bachelor” and other songs like“Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time” and “Crazy=Genius.”

BTS is a popular South Korean boy band, nominated for Top Social Artist along with Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, and Shawn Mendes.

BTS has garnered a large following on social media.

They were nominated and won last year for Top Social Artist, being the first ever K-pop group to be nominated and win a Billboard Music Award. They broke Justin Bieber’s winning streak, and were nominated last year in that category along with Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes.

Kelly Clarkson will host the show, and will be held on May 20 on NBC.
