The Royal Rumble is always an anticipated event for every wrestling fan because it leads up to the biggest wrestling event of the year, WrestleMania. The Royal Rumble match itself is exciting because you never know who is going to show up and who is going to win.
The winners get a guaranteed championship match at WrestleMania.
Before the royal rumble matches, there were championship matches that took place in the event. The Smackdown women’s champion, Sasha Banks, defended her title against Carmella. Sasha Banks defeated Carmella by submission and is now waiting to face the winner of the women’s royal rumble at WrestleMania.
On the men’s side, both championships were on the line; WWE Champion Drew McIntyre defended and defeated Goldberg by pinfall in a quick match. On the Smackdown side, Universal Champion Roman Reigns defeated Kevin Owens in a Last Man Standing Match.
Both champions now have to wait for who they are defending their titles against as they await the decision of the royal rumble winner.
The Women’s Royal Rumble offered many good highlights, like reunions between former tag team partners like the Iconics, and the Riot Squad. Some returns in the rumble like former women’s champions included Victoria and Torrie Wilson. Former champions Bayley and Naomi started off the rumble and the most dominant performances came from former NXT women’s champions, Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair.
In the end, it was Bianca Belair who was victorious after eliminating Rhea Ripley over the top rope to win her first rumble. This was her second appearance in the rumble and entered the rumble at position number three.
Belair lasted over 50 minutes in the match and eliminated four women throughout the match. Belair was emotional after the match since this is her first-ever Rumble win and has the opportunity to get a championship match at WrestleMania. Many fans anticipate a match between her and Smackdown women’s champion, Sasha Banks.
The main event was the Men’s Royal Rumble which started with Edge and Randy Orton. Edge chose the number one position, a position that seems almost impossible for a wrestler to win the rumble.
Nonetheless, Edge held on and battled throughout the whole match.
After making his shocking return in last year’s Royal Rumble, he wanted to continue to wrestle despite coming from another injury and having inconsistent activity for so long. He only had one match last year, apart from the Royal Rumble, which was against Randy Orton in last year’s WrestleMania.
Before the shocking return, he wasn’t able to wrestle because of a serious injury that required neck surgery, which forced him to retire. Now back in this year’s rumble, Edge wants to make a statement that he is ready to be back in activity and ready to fight for a championship.
The rumble including some returns that many fans recognize over the years such as the likes of Carlito, who came in at #8, Kane at #18, Hurricane Helms at #23, Seth Rollins at #29, and Christian at #24 which caused the most exciting return. Earlier in the rumble, Orton was severely hurt because of the damage caused by Edge.
Orton wasn’t eliminated but he was out for most of the match. NXT wrestler Damian Priest had a great rumble debut with four eliminations.
In the end, the remaining four wrestlers in the ring were Christian, Edge, Seth Rollins, and Braun Strowman. The big man was eliminated by Edge while his best friend Christian was eliminated by Rollins.
Edge then eliminates Rollins thinking he won the match then and there, but there was one person left. Orton came back in the ring to surprise Edge, but the Rated-R superstar wasn’t caught off guard and also eliminated Orton to then win his second-ever rumble.
Edge has a championship opportunity at WrestleMania and has put himself in a good position to win back a title he never lost.
