Us vegans need to eat too

Vegans and vegetarians appreciate the effort, but do better CSI

Working a full-time job while going to school full time can makes mealtimes hard to master, especially if you wanted to eat something on the healthier side. As a vegan, I would have to make sure I packed multiple lunches with multiple ice packs all while making sure I had both my work bag and school bag ready to go for the day. That’s at least four bags, in case you lost count. Much to my surprise, our CSI cafe have lots of vegan options and so I brought myself to the cafe between classes to see what they had.

I tried the vegan grilled cheese, and it was tasted amazing. I also tried the vegan milkshake which I was very happy see they offered. This trip to the cafe made me hopeful and led me to believe I no longer had to carry these many bags with me to campus every day. Until a few days later, when I returned for what I hoped would be another yummy vegan meal only to be disappointed.

Since you have to order and pay before you enter the area where you are served your food, I waited for my vegan omelet at the register. Much sooner than I expected, my number was called, and i was told that the cafe’s vegan eggs were expired, just my luck. I tried to be optimistic, I asked if I could order the vegan burger instead and was told that they did not have that in stock either. Terrific. I ended up having to settle for another vegan grilled cheese, which was still just as delicious, but once again, was the only vegan choice. While I can appreciate the effort CSI made creating a vegan menu, there are so many plant-based meal options out there, that should be made accessible to students who have a hard time finding the right meal that fits their diets. Yes, the cafe has more vegan options, but it seems to me that more can be and should be done to make it a priority.
