Why are Student Only Events Public Knowledge?

By: Amanda Musto

CSI clubs are showcased to the public on CSI Connect even if they are student only events. Why is the school lacking in higher security for their students?

As most members of the CSI community know, whether it be students or faculty, if you want to find out information on club meetings and campus events, you can check out the CSI Connect website. While scrolling through the countless pages of events, each box has the event or club name along with the date, time, and location that it will be taking place. It is not until you click into the individual event that it tells you if it is open to the public or not. Seems to not be the smartest way to go about that.

If the club meeting that is being held is only available to members of the CSI community, then why can anyone outside of that be able to find out all the information for it? Considering the fact that the campus is already very accessible to the outside world, not even needing to show your student id to enter buildings, then shouldn’t the school at least not give more information away to the public?

After an incident on campus of an individual joining a club and spending time on campus, while not being a student, then it begs the question, “Why was it so simple for this to happen?” It all airs on safety and when students enroll in college and pay as much tuition as they do, they should be able to feel safe at said school and not have to worry about people coming in off the street to intermingle on campus.

To give students a little extra security when it comes to student only events and clubs, the school should update the way CSI Connect is set up. When going on the site, one should have to enter their SLAS information to view all student only events. We have to use our SLAS information or CUNY log-ins for all other accounts and portals as well as to use wifi and computers on campus, so what is one more site, if it helps keep things private. All other events listed on there that are open to the public can stay as public viewed, but the rest should be hidden to the public eye. As an extra step just for students if they want, club officers can ask students to show their student id’s when coming to events or joining clubs. It may seem a little silly, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
