Snow removal on campus is not the only issue CSI is currently tackling, as safety concerns have mounted due to the public nature of the campus; thanks to an influx of cash that shouldn’t be a problem anymore.

With the instability of the current political climate in America and the increase of turmoil on college campuses, heightened by a recent occurrence at Brown University, it’s about time CSI improved its public safety especially since the campus and its resources are open to the public 24/7.

Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis confirmed that CSI will receive 2 million in federal funding to increase safety measures on campus.

“This $2 million in federal funding I secured for the College of Staten Island is an investment in the safety and well-being of our community. At a time when campus safety is more important than ever, this funding will strengthen preparedness, improve coordination, and help ensure CSI remains a safe, secure environment for learning and community engagement,” said Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis. “The establishment of a centralized Public Safety Center will provide a single, easily accessible location for emergency services and essential support resources.”

This federal funding will be used towards a Public Safety Center within CSI’s library, acting as a hub for emergency services, safety information, and other support resources. This will improve Public Safety operations for CSI students, staff, faculty, and even members of the community that utilize the campus and its resources for events.

The funds will also be used for security cameras that will be placed throughout CSI’s 204-acre campus that houses 22 buildings.

CSI’s President, Dr. Timothy Lynch joined Congresswoman Malliotakis in emphasizing the importance of this project and the impact it will have on CSI and members of the community.

“This will allow our colleagues in public safety to have greater visibility into issues that are arising on campus,” said Lynch “And it will allow them to do a job that is so critical during this time in higher education.”
