As the new year started, people did not just focus on making resolutions, they had opened their camera rolls and timelines to 2016. What started off as a few nostalgic posts had quickly grown into a full social media trend, with users including celebrities reimaging 2026 as if it were 2016 all over again.
Across platforms like TikTok and Instagram, people are recreating 2016 aesthetics, complete with grainy filters, bold captions, and references to trends that had once dominated middle school group chats.
Hashtags like #2026IsTheNew2016 and #2016 have skyrocketed across different platforms showing millions of people are using it on Instagram and TikTok, showing how global the trend has become.
What may have started with Gen Z users quickly crossed generational lines, with millennials also posting side by side comparisons of themselves 10 years ago and now. The trend has become more than just a joke, it has turned into a digital experience that connects users with memory.
For many, the trend has become a way to reconnect with a version of themselves from a decade ago.
Others are embracing the decade old trends that once dominated classrooms and feed, including signature fashion pieces and playful photo poses.
Music has become a major part of this trend. Playlists are being labeled as “2016 core” which are circulating the media, featuring songs that instantly transport listeners back to bus rides and late-night homework sessions.
Along with music it has allowed users to hear the opening notes or instrumental of specific songs that brings back a relaxation of memories that are tied to friendships, first crushes, and routines that had once felt normal but now give the feeling of nostalgia.
Many hit songs like Closer by The Chainsmokers, Into You by Ariana Grande, and Panda by Desiigner have been dominating throwback playlists across Spotify and Apple Music.
For many people, the resurface of 2016 stands for more than just style. Some say revisiting 2016 offers comfort and a sense of stability during uncertain times. Others believe it reflects how fast trends move today, so quickly that ten years ago already feels vintage.
Although 2026 is reshaping its own identity, this wave of nostalgia proves that the past could still hold power online.
In a digital world that constantly pushes forward, sometimes the biggest trend is just looking back. The speed at which trend cycles move online makes even recent memories feel like it was a long time ago turning the nostalgic moments into one of things that can bring people together.
