Walt Disney Studios reveals all the details to the Enchanted sequel titled, “Disenchanted”.

In 2007, Disney’s “Enchanted” made its debut at the London Theater and was well-received by the public. What made this movie unique was that it was both an homage to numerous Walt Disney animated films such as, “Cinderella,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “Snow White,” and the movie was a satirical adaptation of Disney’s films. 

Fourteen years after the 2007 film was released, Disney officially announced that they will be releasing the movie’s sequel titled, “Disenchanted.” According to a post on Twitter, “Disenchanted” will be released exclusively on Disney Plus in 2022, but the exact date has not been confirmed. 

  “Working with Disney again has been like coming home,” said director Alan Shankman. “With Amy and this extraordinary cast, Alan and Stephen’s mind-blowing new score, and Barry and Disney’s support, I just hope to bring magic and joy to audiences around the world.”

The movie was filmed in Enniskerry, a village located in Dublin, Ireland. The village was transformed into a fairytale village containing a variety of shops that refer to popular Disney movies. These shops include: “A Whole Food World,” “A Tower of Hair,” “Smee’s Cheese,” and “Bibidi Bobidi Butchers.”

Although the trailer hasn’t been released yet, Disney revealed the plot of the sequel when they finished filming. The story will take place fifteen years after the ending of the first movie where Giselle and her family move to the suburb of Monroeville. 

Despite finding her happily ever after, Giselle begins to question if she is truly happy. This results in a series of unfortunate events that turns the lives of those living in the real world and Andalasia upside down.

Amy Adams will return as Giselle, a fairytale princess who was forced from the animated world of Andalasia by the evil Queen Narissa and found herself in the live-action world of New York City. 

The movie will also include more returning characters like Giselle’s husband Robert Philip played by Patrick Dempsey, Prince Edward played by James Marsden and Edward’s wife, Nancy Tremaine played by Frozen’s Idina Menzel. 

 “James Marsden and I have remained friends through the years, and we just have a blast,” Menzel said in an interview on Us Weekly. “We have a song together and we get to be really silly and fun.”

Speaking of songs, the sequel will include new musical numbers written by Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. They originally collaborated for the first movie and received Academy Award nominations.

During an interview on Variety, Dempsy revealed that he will be singing during the film. It will be the first time that he has ever sung on screen.

 “I’ve never sung publicly – for a reason. So bear with me.” Dempsey said. “I hope the fans embrace it. But they’ve set me up for success and the lyrics are really fun.”

Sadly, Susan Sarandon who played Queen Narissa won’t be reprising her role for the upcoming sequel. However, Maya Rudolph announced on Twitter that she will be playing Giselle’s “new adversary,” Malvina Monroe. 

“What’s a good fairy tale without a great villain?” Rudolph wrote. “I’ll see you in Andalasia my pretties…” 

Rachel Covey who played Giselle and Robert’s six year-old daughter, Morgan, will also not return to the sequel. Instead, nineteen year-old Gabriella Baldacchino will be playing a now teenage Morgan.

Other new cast members will include Jayma Mays as Ruby, Yvette Nicole Brown as Rosaleen, Kolton Stewart as Malvina’s son, Oscar Nunez as Edgar. Disney has not revealed the type of roles these characters will play but they were rumored to be Malvina’s partners in crime.

Hopefully, this sequel will be worth the long wait and will be able to recapture the magic of “Enchanted.”
